Here is a test I have done for implementing 3D into a live action plate:

It started in 2009, in the time a had between projects at the company I was working for.
I finished it 6 months later after I left the company to work as a freelance compositor.
The modeling is done in Cinema 4D, the texturing in Maya, the animation, shading, lighting and rendering in Houdini HD and the compositing in Shake and Nuke.Boris the robot

I modeled this guy in modo and ZBrush. Then rigged and rendered in Houdini. 
I implemented the skin shader from GPU Gems 3. It is very nice, and looks good.

The animations are more like an experiment to me, since most of the work was on the modeling and rendering.A cartoony character

Character created entirely with Houdini. Rigged with the Biped Auto Rig for the baseanimation, while a CHOPS music-driven system was used for the trumpet trunk animation.
