EXR files are an advanced file format developed and made public by ILM which support:

• Many planes of images (called a DeepRaster in Houdini terms)
• HDR: High Dynamic Range data represented in 32- and 16-bit floats
• Multiple compression schemes
• Useful meta-data for things like Image Window and Data Window
