What is Houdini Apprentice?

The HoudiniApprentice Program is Side Effect's free non-commercial version of Houdini. For full info, see Side Effect's main page on it here: The Apprentice Program

The HoudiniApprenticeHD Program is Side Effect's student-friendly versions of the Apprentice. It follows the same limitations as the completely free Apprentice version except it allows the artist to render at HD resolution without a WaterMark. This is available for students and educational facilities. For full info, see Side Effect's main page on it here: The Apprentice HD Program

It is a fully complete package - i.e. all the Contexts are enabled and it also includes the HDK - Houdini Developers Kit.

For help, please post on Side Effects Apprentice Forum and look in their Apprentice Blog

Limitations :
  • You may only render with Houdini's native renderer; Mantra.
  • Apprentice: Render resolutions are limited to 768x576 (PAL resolution) and bear the WaterMark mentioned below.
  • Apprentice HD: Render resolutions are limited to HD resolution (1920x1080) with no WaterMark.
  • Any other SOHO outputs other than the shipped Mantra ROP are not supported.
  • Images may only be saved in pic, rat and jpg format.
    • There is a small WaterMark on the bottom of the image. With jpg format, this watermark is burned-in. With pic and rat, the watermark is only overlaid upon display and upon conversion to jpg - which means that you can generate textures (ShaderUnwrap) and composite those formats in Houdini's compositor without the watermark getting in the way.
  • Scene files hip/hipnc and Operator Type Libraries otl can only be opened in Apprentice. If they are opened in another license (HoudiniMaster/HoudiniEscape/etc) then the session will be switched into an Apprentice session.
