Prisms
From Odwiki
Prisms is the first 3D animation package ever to use a fully procedural approach. Greg Hermanovic and Kim Davidson originated it and still own Side Effects Software. They (plus Mark Elendt and Paul Breslin) have received two technical achievement awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Prisms and Houdini.
It was an acronym which stood for Photo Realistic Image Synthesis and Mathematical Simulation.
Prisms had much of the base functionality of Houdini's SOPs however the interface was very rigid and (some feel) unintuitive. Prisms was used extensively on Apollo 13, Titanic and many other feature films.
Prisms was a contemporary (within a year or two) of Softimage, Alias Poweranimator, TDI Explore etc.
Check out the Sidefx Nostalgia section of the Odforce gallery for screenshots of Prisms, and early versions of Houdini:
