A scanning pattern of parallel lines that form the display of an image projected on a cathode-ray tube of a television set or display screen.

This is opposed to vector graphic displays. The term has come to be synonymous with the array of pixels stored in an image. These pixels are often stored in scanlines which map to the scanning pattern of a CRT (though usually not interlaced).
