Learning Houdini is very easy when you know where to look for things. The interface in Houdini is very consistant across the different areas (some exceptions are inevitable of course) and there is actually very little to remember when looking for functionality in Houdini.

  1. Ctrl + RMB (hold down the Control key and click and hold the Right Mouse Button) pops up a context-sensitive menu. This simply means that where you click with the RMB is important!
  2. At the top of most Panes are pull-down menus that control various things in the pane associated with that menu. In many cases the pull-down menus offer the same options at Ctrl+RMB in a pane.
  3. Most icons have tooltips. If you hold the mouse pointer (without clicking) over an icon, a help popup message should appear. Make sure you have Settings->Balloon Help Tags turned on.
  4. Using the RMB often pops up a menu that is specific to the item you clicked on. For example, in a ParametersPane, clicking with the Right mouse button on the name of a parameter will pop up an animation menu. In a NetworkEditorPane, clicking with the Right mouse button on a node will pop up a menu specific to that node.
  5. When you use the Middle or Right mouse buttons (without holding down a key) in a "blank" area like a NetworkEditorPane or a ChannelEditorPane, Middle with zoom and Right will pan.
