UVPelting
From Odwiki
UV Pelting is a technique for generating good UV's for complex organic models. The concept is similar to real life animal pelting. The technique involves stretching the geometry out on a "rack" along user-defined seams, with the algorithm attempting to preserve face area during the solution. Done correctly, this technique can yield very good results on complex model quite quickly. Pelting was presented at SIGGRAPH 2000 by Dan Piponi and George Borshukov at Manex
Houdini has a built in SOP for performing pelting called the UVPeltSOP. Some attributes of the solution can be variable across the geometry and/or rack, such as Stiffness and Weight. These attributes can easily be painted on using the PaintSOP.
